Hatchery Research Center board has opening

You have until Jan. 20 to apply for the opening to serve on the Oregon Hatchery Research Center Board.

The vacancy if for a representative of the independent science community, meaning someone with a fisheries science background not a member of a federal or state agency.

The position is one of a dozen on the board that has representatives from commercial and recreational fishing interests, agriculture and forestry management, Native American tribes, habitat restoration and fish conservation groups.

The term for the new member would run until July 1, 2017.

The board is charged with advising the research center director on operational, budget and research priorities.

Candidates must submit an application and provide three references by the application deadline. The director of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will review applications and appoint the new board member as early as mid-February.

The Hatchery Research Center is a cooperative research facility operated by Fish and Wildlife and Oregon State University.

Its mission is to develop an understanding of the mechanisms that may create differences between hatchery and wild fish, and devise ways to reduce and manage the differences so that hatcheries can be used responsibly in the conservation and management of native fish.
