To add a personal, homey touch, C&R incorporated the homeowner’s small antique table as the kitchen island. A built-in bookcase at the end of the Butler’s pantry shows off the homeowner’s colorful cookbook collection.

When choosing a color for the kitchen, don't overlook the most simplistic choice: white.

White kitchens are cheery, bright and timeless, according to C&R Remodeling. The Salem company says people love the versatility of the classic neutral palette because simple accessorizing can artistically transform the area.

Bright window coverings and a colorful Quimper Faience pottery collection add pop to this white kitchen. Full-height cabinetry increased storage capacity by 30 percent.

"It is crucial to relate the white kitchen to the homeowner's lifestyle, interests and color preferences," C&R Interior Designer Linda Stewart said. "A little color goes a long way in a white kitchen, and when used appropriately, the kitchen really comes to life."

C&R Remodeling recently helped a homeowner transform her kitchen from old and dark to gleaming white. She didn't want her kitchen to feel cold or sterile, and by with C&R's help, her kitchen became infused with color and personality. A key element was the inclusion of her colorful Quimper Faience pottery collection.

C&R Designer Beth Rhoades added custom storage cabinetry around the double ovens and refrigerator in this remodeled kitchen. This provided ample space for kitchen necessities, leaving more room for display cabinets.

In order to provide adequate display space for the pottery and other collectibles, C&R removed the existing cabinet soffits and installed full-height cabinetry. This increased storage capacity by 30 percent.

Instead of paint, custom-designed window coverings also add color to the room.

"We wanted to add textural interest related to the dish colors," Stewart said. "The pattern speaks of French farm scenes so prevalent in Quimper Faience pottery."

When kitchens are white

Interior Designer Linda Stewart shares some of her strategies for infusing white kitchens with color and charm:

  • Choose a countertop that creates a bold contrast.
  • Integrate natural wood in the design. The wood tone softens the space and adds warmth to the palette.
  • Add glass inserts to cabinet doors, and let your accessories shine!
  • Don't be shy about displaying cookbooks. After all, it is a kitchen.
  • Find ways to show off colorful serving pieces and collectibles. Why should you only see those beautiful items on special occasions?
  • Make sure the cabinetry has enough detail to give plenty of shadow and depth. Furniture-grade details add pleasing architectural interest.
  • Incorporate texture with coordinating window treatments. Custom treatments offer unlimited design options and can be cost-effective.
  • Avoid clutter as much as possible. Try rotating your favorite pieces in and out for a look that's always fresh.

Off the side of the kitchen, C&R eliminated a hall closet to make room for a stunning Butler’s Pantry. Glass doors provide an entire wall of display space.
