Dept. of Revenue: Millions in taxes collected on pot sales

Statesman Journal

A previous version of this story incorrectly stated the date of sales for the marijuana tax. The sales occurred during January 2016.

Oregon collected $3.48 million in taxes for the first full month of taxable recreational marijuana sales, according to the Oregon Department of Revenue.  Taxes were collected from Feb. 1 to March 4, 2016.

February was the first month the figures on tax collection via recreational marijuana sales were tabulated by the state. According to the Oregon Health Authority, there were more than 300 medical marijuana dispensaries selling recreational marijuana in January.

Medical marijuana dispensaries in Oregon began selling recreational marijuana in October. Those sales were tax-free until Jan. 6.

Initial estimates said Oregonians bought more than $11 million of marijuana in the first week of recreational sales.
