A memorial service for Lance Cpl. Ty Hart has been scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, at Stayton High School, the family announced Monday.

Hart, a Stayton graduate and former student athlete, was one of the 12 Marines who died Jan. 14 when two helicopters crashed during training exercises in Hawaii. He is survived by his wife, Hanna, parents, Trina and Mike, and brothers, Greg and Alan.

The public is welcome to attend the service, which will be held in the school’s gymnasium, at 757 W Locust St., in Stayton.

On Monday, Gov. Kate Brown ordered all flags at public institutions to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on the date of his memorial service in honor of Hart.

“Lance Corporal Ty Hart represents the best of Oregon,” Brown said. “I ask all Oregonians to keep Ty’s family and friends in their thoughts. His legacy of service and sacrifice is a reminder of the risks our military members take daily to preserve all that we hold dear.”

A memorial fund has been established in Ty Hart’s name online at www.gofundme.com/tyhart. The fund will support Stayton High School athletes who may need help with fees or equipment necessary to participate in sports.

Ty Hart was described by those who knew him as a positive, uplifting person who always seems to be wearing a smile. A memorial service for the fallen Marine will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Stayton High School gymnasium
