Three stores in the Salem/Keizer area will participate in Free Comic Book day on May 6

While we may have one less comic shop compared to last year (NW Comic Gallery closed in December), there’s still plenty to do for Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, May 6.Here’s where to go and what you’ll find.

Borderlands Games: While you can visit Borderlands for free comics 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., that’s not all you will find happening. There’s also a Board Game Swap 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. so bring one of your less-loved games to trade, plus the Star Wars X-Wing 100pt Tournament 1 to 6 p.m. and Magic the Gathering Standard Showdown - Amonkhet 4 to 9 p.m. And on May 4, the shop will celebrate Star Wars Day, with movies, TV shows, demos, games and even blue milk and cookies. Borderlands is at 546 High St. NE. Call  503-485-2554.

Tony's Kingdom of Comics and Collectibles: Get three free comics while you meet local artists AnnMare and Shawn Cruz of Corrosive Comics and visit with characters from Star Wars Oregon and the Portland Superhero Coalition 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Plus, there will be cheap eats from El Patron Mexican Grill, treats from Birdie’s Bistro and a silent auction and raffle raising funds for Magic Wheelchair, a nonprofit organization that creates custom costumes for wheelchairs. Bring food donations for the Keizer Community Food Bank to earn extra free comics. Tony's is at 3856 River Road N, Keizer. Call 503-463-1142.

Wild Things Games: Pick up two free comics and possibly some other goodies 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. If any are left over, you can also pick up comics Sunday, May 7. Get there early so you don’t miss out. There also will be a Magic the Gathering Standard Showdown — Amonkhet at 2 p.m. Wild Things is at 241 Commercial St. NE. Call 503-364-4263.

Those interested in comic books also may enjoy checking out Keizer Homegrown Theatre's latest production, “Hearts Like Fists,” a superhero romance written by Adam Szymkowicz and directed by Jay Gipson-King. Catch it 7:30 p.m. May 5-6, 11-13 and 2 p.m. May 7 at  Chemeketa Community College Auditorium, Building 6, 4000 Lancaster Drive NE.
